Tourism, an important economic activity, is an area of public policy in most OECD countries. The Tourism Committee acts as a forum of exchange for monitoring policies and structural changes affecting the development of international tourism and promotes a sustainable economic growth of tourism. The mandate of the Tourism Committee highlights the main missions of the OECD in the field of tourism.

Increasing the Attractiveness of Places through Cultural Resources: Publication and Follow-up Seminars

The Tourism Committee has recently completed a study on “Increasing the Attractiveness of Places through Cultural Resources”. The main documents and case studies are summarised in "The Impact of Culture on Tourism" to be released by mid-January 2009 (www.oecdbookshop.org).

Two follow-up seminars will be organised to disseminate the outcomes: “Culture and Tourism: A Strategic Partnership ” on 23-24 January 2009 in Mexico; and “A new Design for Tourism:  culture, tourism and creative industries; driving forces for local development” on 26-27 February 2009 (visit www.vorarlberg.travel).

“Whole of government” approach needed to ensure competitiveness and sustainability in tourism, says OECD

Governments need to put in place comprehensive strategies to make their tourism industries more competitive and work with industry and regional and local authorities to promote sustainable tourism development. This was the message from a High-level OECD Committee meeting on Tourism in Italy on 9-10 October 2008 involving ministers and industry experts from 27 OECD countries and 12 non-member countries.
