The economic downturn will hit the Internet economy hard in 2009, according to the latest available OECD estimates. The IT Outlook 2008 says that the IT industry is likely to have grown by 4% at most in 2008 compared to the previous year. But with the outlook for the global economy worsening and business and consumer confidence plumetting, growth will remain flat or decline in 2009.

The new STAN Bilateral Trade Database (the 2008 edition) is available. It includes annual values of exports and imports for all OECD countries and a selection of Non Members as reporters. Data are presented in US dollars and broken down by partner and by industry for the years 1988-2006.

This new working paper presents various indicators using existing data on R&D investments, innovation survey data, patent data and data on licensing, illustrating the increasing importance and the different characteristics of open innovation across companies, industries and countries.

New STAN tables have been added. The December 2008 version provides data for 26 countries, of which 12 with time series up to 2007. Tables for other countries will be added as they become available.

The global economic downturn is having a severe impact on the steel sector, according to government and industry representatives meeting at a joint OECD Steel Committee/ World Steel Association workshop in Kuala Lumpur. Steel demand, production, and prices have plummeted, major layoffs have been announced, and demand for key raw materials such as iron ore, ferrous scrap, and coal has declined sharply, said OECD Steel Committee Chairman Risaburo Nezu.

The objective of this workshop was to take stock of advances in social networks analysis and explore the possible use of this approach in OECD work, notably on innovation. It sought to present the network approach to economists and stimulate discussion with experts on the analytical potential of this approach for innovation analysis and measurement. This review assesses Denmark’s entrepreneurial performance and benchmarks Denmark internationally as regards entrepreneurial activity and performance (notably start-up rates and high-growth trajectories of firms). It presents framework conditions for entrepreneurship and assesses the effectiveness of entrepreneurship policies. It also sheds light on the governance aspect and the division of labour between different levels of government.

This new working paper reflects an initial analysis employing a pioneering new OECD database. It is among the first systematic attempts to analyse comparatively the distribution of innovative activity across regions in OECD economies with a set of homogenous measures for both input and output in the process of knowledge production and dissemination.

OECD governments should increase international co-operation and strengthen links between public research bodies and industry in order to boost science and innovation and drive long-term growth, according to a new OECD report.

Broadband subscriptions reached 251 million by June 2008, an increase of 14% from June 2007. This growth increased broadband penetration rates to 21.3 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, up from 20% in December 2007.
